Poll: Americans Back Rigorous Dental Hand Skills Testing

USA: A recent national survey underscores widespread public backing for maintaining stringent dental licensing standards, particularly the requirement for hand skills testing. The poll, commissioned by the American Association of Dental Boards (AADB), highlights that most Americans oppose efforts to eliminate this critical component of dental licensure. Currently, a majority of states mandate that dentists and dental hygienists demonstrate their clinical competence through hands-on examinations, which assess their ability to perform procedures safely and effectively.

“Most people appear to want dentists to demonstrate their practical skills,” noted Peter Mitchell, Chief Insight Officer of Marketing for Change Co., the firm behind the survey. “Two-thirds of those we polled opposed efforts to exempt dentists from hand skills testing.” The findings reveal that 82% of respondents believe these examinations are essential to evaluate a dentist’s capability to carry out procedures safely. Conducted between December 30, 2024, and January 9, 2025, the survey included 1,863 registered U.S. voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.28 percentage points.

The survey also reveals strong resistance to measures that could weaken existing licensing requirements. Key findings include:

• 83% of respondents agree that dental professionals should meet state-specific continuing education requirements.
• 69% support maintaining current licensing standards without reduction.
• 65% oppose allowing dentists licensed under less stringent standards in other states to practice in their state.

These results reflect a clear preference among the public for maintaining or even enhancing the rigor of dental licensure processes. As states consider legislative changes, such as the adoption of licensure compacts aimed at increasing professional mobility, balancing portability with accountability remains a central concern.
