QATAR: The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) in partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation and Primary Health Care Corporation has launched a National campaign for oral and dental health, running until the end of September.
This initiative seeks to raise public awareness of oral health across all age groups, from children to the elderly, with a focus on promoting the concept of a healthy mouth in a healthy body and discouraging harmful habits that negatively impact oral and dental health, particularly smoking and the consumption of high-sugar foods and beverages.
Tackling Tooth Decay in Children
One of the primary objectives of the campaign is to address the alarming rate of children’s tooth decay, which reached 85 percent in the national survey conducted in 2017 among age groups between 4 and 8. To combat this issue, the campaign encourages individuals to adopt a healthy dietary regimen and reduce sugar intake in their food and beverages. By promoting healthier eating habits, the campaign aims to reduce the prevalence of tooth decay among children.
In addition to dietary guidance, the campaign stresses the importance of daily oral care at home. It aims to educate the public on the significance of maintaining good oral hygiene practices and encourages regular dental check-ups. Furthermore, the initiative seeks to strengthen communication between dental services and protection departments in various medical institutions and engage various sectors within the community to foster a collaborative approach to oral health promotion.
Multi-Platform Awareness
As part of the campaign, the National Oral and Dental Health Committee has undertaken several initiatives to disseminate information and raise awareness. These include the publication of educational and cultural brochures on oral and dental health through the MoPH’s social media platforms and those of its health sector partners. Display screens have also been placed at the entrances of public and private health facilities to ensure that the campaign’s message reaches a wide audience.
The National campaign for oral and dental health represents a concerted effort to prioritise and improve oral health across all segments of the Qatari population, ultimately aiming to create a healthier and more informed community.
