Realistic patient-type robots for dental training unveiled at IDS 2023

Japan: Tmsuk Co., Ltd., in collaboration with Nissin Co., Ltd., exhibited its two realistic patient-type robots at two recent dental shows in the US and Germany.

The first exhibit of Pedia_Roid, a paediatric patient simulator robot, was on display at the American Academy of Dental Education Annual Session & Exhibition in Portland, Oregon, from March 11th to 14th, 2023.

The second exhibit of DENTAROiD, a patient-type robot developed for learning dental treatment techniques, was unveiled during the International Dental Show (IDS Cologne 2023) in Cologne, Germany, from March 14th to 18th, 2023.

Robots Designed for Paediatric Dental Treatment

Pedia_Roid is a model designed to provide skill acquisition training in paediatric dental treatment. The robot offers a realistic experience of sudden changes in children’s physical conditions, including emotional expressions, complexion, pupils, and breathing sounds.

DENTAROiD is a full-body patient model that can reproduce realistic patient movements and reactions during dental treatment. The movements mimic a young patient’s pain response, coughing, head movement, tongue movement, vomiting reflex, and breathing movements.

The model also comes equipped with additional features such as pulse monitoring, vital monitor display, and a voice change system. Both robots are developed using silicon material, which mimics human skin and makes for a realistic patient experience.

Pedia_Roid, has been developed by tmsuk Co., Ltd., a company based in Kyoto, Japan, in response to the need for clinical training opportunities for children in the field of medical education.

Not Restricted to Dental Training

The robot, made of silicone and standing at 110cm tall and weighing 23kg, is designed to simulate the violent movements of children who do not want treatment. These include sudden changes in their condition, and their emotional expressions, complexion changes, pupils, and breathing sounds are all accurately reproduced.

Pedia_Roid is not limited to dental treatment training but can also be used for basic life-saving training, allowing trainees to repeatedly perform procedures until they are proficient.

The robot can also simulate emergency responses, such as arrhythmia and abnormal breathing, which are difficult to practice in real-life scenarios.

The DENTAROiD, standing at 160cm tall and made of silicone, can realistically reproduce the patient’s movements, such as opening the mouth according to the doctor’s instructions, sudden head shaking, coughing, and vomiting reflexes. The robot can also simulate emergency responses, such as arrhythmia and abnormal breathing, which are difficult to practice in real-life scenarios.

Potentially Revolutionise Dental Education

Nissin Co., Ltd., a company that supports a wide range of dental care, from dental education to clinical practice, has signed a sales agency agreement with tmsuk Co., Ltd. to promote the robot’s use in dental training. The DENTAROiD has been available for sale since 2014 and has been introduced in universities in Japan, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and Turkmenistan.

According to tmsuk, these patient-type robots could revolutionize dental education by providing trainees with realistic experiences that are difficult to obtain with traditional mannequins. The development of such technologies could ultimately improve patient outcomes by ensuring that dental practitioners are well trained and able to provide high-quality care.
