Report Highlights Trends in America’s Oral Health Awareness

USA: According to research conducted by Delta Dental Plans Association, a growing number of adults in the United States recognize the vital role of oral health in overall wellness. The report, titled “The 2024 State of America’s Oral Health and Wellness Report,” reveals that 92% of adults believe their oral health is closely connected to their overall health.

Furthermore, adults are becoming more aware of the link between poor oral health and specific health conditions. As Dr. Paul O’Kane, Dental Director at Delta Dental of Idaho, stated: “Oral health is not just about a healthy smile; it’s intricately linked to our overall well-being. This year’s report underscores a crucial shift in consumer awareness, recognizing the profound connection between oral health and chronic health conditions.”

Oral Health and Mental Well-being

The report also highlights the connection between oral health and mental well-being. More than 9 in 10 adults believe that taking action to protect their oral health allows them to be more confident, while over 3 in 4 say oral health is closely connected to their mental health.

Dr. Kassandra Kulb, Dental Director at Delta Dental of Kentucky, emphasized the importance of this finding: “The relationship between oral health and a person’s mental state is profound. Ignoring dental care can not only lead to discomfort but can also contribute to feelings of embarrassment, isolation, and even bullying.

“This highlights the urgency of prioritizing comprehensive oral care for one’s mental well-being.”

The report indicates that more adults are adhering to preventive oral health care habits to avoid serious dental issues and financial repercussions. Approximately 3 in 4 adults met the criteria for brushing, rinsing, and flossing, motivated by factors such as preventing cavities, disease, and tooth decay, as well as saving money in the long run.

Rise in Preventive Dental Visits and Dental Insurance Coverage

Encouragingly, preventive dental care visits have increased over the past year, while unexpected visits have declined. Additionally, dental insurance coverage among adults has reached a 5-year high, with 65% of adults currently having dental insurance. Delta Dental’s research suggests that dental insurance supports overall wellness and provides financial assurance, especially during uncertain economic times.

The report also highlights the growing popularity of teledentistry, particularly among younger generations. Nearly half of adults (47%) would use teledentistry – a digital care option where patients can receive consultations, evaluations, and advice remotely.

Dr. Keith Libou, Chief Clinical Officer at Delta Dental of New Jersey and Connecticut, emphasized the potential of teledentistry in improving access to oral health care:

“Embracing teledentistry presents a significant opportunity to enhance oral health care access across geographic, social, and economic populations, including those living in underserved communities.”

The “2024 State of America’s Oral Health and Wellness Report” by Delta Dental Plans Association paints an encouraging picture of increasing awareness and prioritization of oral health in the United States, driven by a better understanding of its impact on overall wellness and the availability of dental insurance and innovative care options.
