Sharjah Social Services Department Expands Dental Care Services for Bedridden Seniors

UAE: The Sharjah Social Services Department (SSSD) has taken a significant step towards enhancing dental care for bedridden seniors aged 60 and above. In a move aimed at providing comprehensive care to those confined to their homes, the department has extended dental services to senior citizens who are unable to leave their beds.

Comprehensive Dental Care at Home

Expanding on its existing initiative to offer complimentary dental treatment to elderly residents, the SSSD has collaborated with the University of Sharjah’s Dental Hospital to introduce home-based dental care services.

This innovative approach, set to begin in September of this year, involves a specialised medical team visiting bedridden patients in their homes. Equipped with essential medical instruments, the team will conduct examinations, deliver treatments, and administer necessary medications in the comfort of the patients’ homes.

Fatima Daoud Al Mazmi, Director of the Health Services Office at the department, highlighted the organisation’s steadfast commitment to the well-being of senior citizens within the Emirate of Sharjah. This initiative is a testament to their dedication to monitoring the welfare of seniors, providing timely assistance, and addressing their unique circumstances and needs. This program represents an expansion of the medical and dental services initiated a year ago by the department, pursuant to a resolution from the Sharjah Executive Council.

Positive Impact on Senior Citizens

Since its inception in June 2022, the dental treatment program for individuals aged 60 and above has significantly impacted the lives of elderly citizens. Approximately 12,614 senior citizens have benefited from dental treatments, including procedures such as gum treatments, root canal therapies, dental prosthetics, oral and dental surgeries, and preventive dental care. The cumulative number of visits for these various treatments has now reached approximately 5,259.

Al Mazmi emphasised that the Dental Hospital of the University of Sharjah serves as the focal point for all medical matters related to dental care for seniors. It’s important to note that cosmetic dental treatments are not covered under this initiative. Additionally, for treatments exceeding 30,000 AED, the patient must provide an accredited medical report detailing their condition to obtain approval from the committee.

This pioneering effort by the Sharjah Social Services Department marks a significant stride in prioritising the oral health and well-being of bedridden senior citizens. The integration of home-based dental care services underscores the Emirate’s dedication to ensuring comprehensive healthcare solutions that cater to the diverse needs of its population.
