China: Shining 3D, a Chinese 3D scanner manufacturer, has launched MetiSmile, a facial 3D scanner specifically designed for dental applications. The MetiSmile is the first 3D facial scanner developed by Shining 3D exclusively for dentistry.
High Speed 3D Model Construction
The MetiSmile scanner can quickly capture facial information to create 3D models, which assists in clinical diagnosis with its advanced software, says Shining 3D. 3D facial scanners are becoming an integral part of digital dentistry, primarily utilized in clinical treatment, aesthetic restorations, occlusal reconstruction, and more.
According to a press release, the MetiSmile’s speed is impressive, as it can construct a 3D facial data model in just 10 seconds by taking photos of patients from multiple angles. This is a handheld face scanner that captures high-fidelity texture, recording and displaying realistic facial color to the patient.
Equipped with three data acquisition cameras and one 5.0 MP HD texture camera, MetiSmile delivers scan accuracy within 50μm, says the manufacturer. The scanner uses Aoralscan’s Ortho Simulator in the software, which allows for the integration of Aoralscan’s intraoral scan data and aligning it with the 3D facial data.
3D Facial Feature Recognition
The software features ortho simulation modules that include automatic lip extraction and one-click tooth segmentation. The software can reportedly also recognize 3D facial features, measure the distance of facial data, and compare facial changes before and after treatment, aiding dentists in diagnosing and evaluating treatments more effectively.
Furthermore, the MetiSmile scanner can capture elevated details of the teeth, and the software aligns the facial and intraoral scans, producing a comprehensive display of the patient’s facial and oral information. The scanner can be used in a fixed or handheld mode, providing flexibility to the dentist.
