Tamil Nadu Orders Probe into 9 Deaths After Dental Treatment

India: An inquiry has been ordered by the Tamil Nadu government into the deaths of nine people allegedly following treatment by a dental surgeon in Vaniyambadi.

Deaths Attributed to Brain Death and Coma

The issue came to light when locals pasted a poster outside the closed VTS Dental Clinic with the names of the deceased. While eight of the cases were attributed to brain death, one was due to coma. The names were of individuals from different areas in Tamil Nadu.

The medical team, led by Joint Director of Health, Tirupattur, Dr K. Marimuthu, will be comprised of four doctors, including Dr Marimuthu himself, and will conduct an inquiry at the VTS Dental clinic on May 4. Dr Arivarasan, the dental surgeon in question, will also be asked to provide a statement.

Skepticism from Medical Professionals

While some medical professionals are skeptical about the allegations, the locals maintain that the deaths were caused by the dental surgeon’s treatment. One senior doctor said, “In my career spanning three decades, this is the first time I am hearing that a treatment by a dentist has led to the death of people. Local people are showing their personal issues to the medical community by raking up such issues.”

The allegations have caused controversy in the medical community, with some professionals considering it highly unlikely that a dental procedure could result in brain death. Despite this, the inquiry committee’s verdict on May 4 will be awaited by both medical professionals and the public.
