Teenager Wins Settlement Over Extended Braces Treatment

UK: A 19-year-old woman, Sherrise Stewart, has successfully secured a £2,750 settlement against her orthodontist for prolonged braces treatment that failed to rectify her dental issues. Sherrise, from Muswell Hill, Haringey, underwent braces treatment at Park Vue Dental Practice in Wood Green in 2017 at the age of 13 to address a minor gap in her front teeth. However, what was intended to be a one to two-year treatment ended up lasting four years, leaving her dissatisfied and self-conscious.

Lingering Dental Issues

Despite four years of wearing braces, Sherrise reported minimal progress in her treatment and the development of new issues with her teeth. She expressed her distress, stating, “After all that time, the gaps in my teeth still weren’t fully corrected.” The extended treatment not only failed to close the initial gap but also led to the emergence of new gaps on the side of her teeth, exacerbating her discomfort and self-consciousness.

Frustrated with her treatment outcome, Sherrise sought legal assistance from the Dental Law Partnership in 2021. Subsequently, she was awarded a £2,750 settlement in an out-of-court agreement, although the orthodontist involved did not admit liability. Jennifer Paine, representing Sherrise, lamented the unnecessary distress caused, emphasizing that better treatment could have prevented her ordeal.

Sherrise’s case highlights the importance of timely and effective orthodontic treatment, particularly for young patients. The prolonged discomfort and psychological impact she endured underscore the need for orthodontists to uphold the highest standards of care and address patients’ concerns promptly. As the matter concludes with a settlement, it serves as a reminder of the significance of accountability and patient satisfaction in dental practice.
