Toxic Watchdog Group Urges Upholding Ban on Mercury Dental Amalgam Sales

THE PHILIPPINES: Toxic watchdog group BAN Toxics has sounded the alarm over the illicit sale of mercury dental amalgam despite a ban in the Philippines.

In a recent market surveillance operation, the group discovered mercury dental amalgam capsules being sold in both physical dental supply stores in Manila and various online platforms such as Lazada, Shopee, and Facebook Marketplace.

Concerning Details

The capsules, containing metallic mercury and labeled with manufacturing and expiration dates, pose serious health risks. Thony Dizon, Toxics Campaigner of BAN Toxics, expressed concern, stating, “This is alarming to find out the over-the-counter and online selling of mercury dental amalgam (in capsule) considering the regulation has been enforced since 2020.”

The Philippine Department of Health (DOH) issued Administrative Order No. 2020-0020, mandating the phase-out of mercury use in dental restorative procedures. Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued Circular No.2022-003, specifically banning mercury-added dental amalgam capsules.

Health and Environmental Implications

Mercury, a component of dental amalgam, poses significant health risks, impacting the nervous, digestive, and immune systems. Recognized by the World Health Organization as a major concern, mercury’s adverse effects extend to both human health and the environment.
