UHS to establish medical and dental college

Pakistan: The University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore will set up its own medical and dental college by 2024, said Prof Ahsan Waheed Rathore, the university’s Vice-Chancellor.

According to Prof Rathore, the university which currently has around 50 medical and dental colleges affiliated with it, has all the resources to start a medical and dental college of its own within the targeted time frame.

“A lecture theater complex will be constructed in Jinnah campus for this purpose with an auditorium as its part”, said Prof Rathore, addressing a meeting of faculty and administrative heads.

Dental college to meet international standards

To be attached to the hospitals at Muridke, Kala Shah Kaku, and Shahdara as the teaching hospitals, the Vice Chancellor announced that the college would be established as per international standards with an estimated cost of Rs2 – 2.5 billion (US$24m – 30m).

To achieve financial autonomy, Prof Rathore said the faculty needed to provide quality undergraduate programs.

Key appointments

The meeting was convened in part to make arrangements for and review of the medical and dental college admission test (MDCAT).

Registrar Dr Asad Zaheer was appointed as chief courier for the conduct of MDCAT while senior faculty members were nominated as head couriers in different cities.

The head couriers will be responsible for conducting MDCAT in their respective cities.
