Unlicensed Dental Practitioner in Korea Sentenced to Prison and Fined

Korea: An unlicensed medical practitioner in Korea was found to have conducted unlawful dental procedures and has received a one-year prison sentence and a fine. The ruling was handed down by the Changwon District Court after he was prosecuted for violating the Special Measures Act on Health Crimes.

Using Unlicensed Medical Equipment

The court’s verdict revealed that the man, without the necessary license, performed dental treatments on patients using medical equipment such as X-ray machines and surgical instruments.

Of particular concern was his practice where he reportedly extracted a patient’s incisor and subsequently attached his self-made gold teeth. Additionally, the unlicensed dentist also constructed and fitted dentures for another patient.

Previous Prosecution

This is not the first time the suspect has faced legal consequences for his actions. In a previous case, he established a separate business location where he provided unlicensed treatments to elderly patients, resulting in an economic profit of 35 million won (US$27.5k).

Considering his repeated engagement in similar criminal activities, the court determined that a stringent penalty aligned with his level of culpability was necessary. Rather than opting for leniency, the court sentenced him to one year of imprisonment and imposed a fine of 3 million won (US$2.4k).
