Woman Awarded £9,000 in Dental Error Settlement

UK: A Welsh woman has been granted a settlement of over £9,000 following an ordeal of subpar dental treatment that resulted in significant errors and ongoing dental complications. The unsettling experience began at the City Dental Practice in Bangor, where she had been receiving treatment for almost a decade.

Carol Ann Williams initially trusted the dental practice with her oral health. However, her faith in their expertise was shattered when she received a poor dental bridge consultation and subsequent treatment. The ordeal left her in substantial pain and led to the diagnosis of periodontal disease. This severe condition caused not only physical discomfort but also considerable mental distress.

Decade of Treatment and a Life-Altering Error

Dr. Behnam Aminenejad treated Ms. Williams for nearly ten years, from January 2012 to August 2021, during which she diligently attended regular dental appointments and followed professional advice for her oral care. In 2019, during one of her appointments, Dr. Aminnejad suggested that her dental bridge needed replacement. Over the course of the next three months, multiple appointments were scheduled to remove the old bridge and install a new one spanning five teeth.

By mid-2019, Carol Ann Williams began encountering recurring issues with her gums around the bridge. Furthermore, she noticed a change in her bite, resulting in her accidentally biting her lip while eating. Despite expressing her concerns, she received reassurances that everything was fine in the treated region. However, in April 2021, she attended an emergency appointment due to gum inflammation, yet was again informed that she was in good oral health. Her world was turned upside down when, during another appointment for an abscess treatment, Dr. Aminnejad diagnosed her with severe periodontal disease, placing her at risk of losing some teeth.

Costly Consequences and Continued Distress

The repercussions of the dental errors have continued into 2023, costing Mrs. Williams thousands of pounds and subjecting her to significant discomfort. The issues with the bridge persist, complicating her eating and oral hygiene routines. Frustrated and distressed by her experiences, Carol sought legal assistance and contacted the Dental Law Partnership in 2021.

The Dental Law Partnership conducted a thorough analysis of her dental records and concluded that if Dr. Aminnejad had exercised reasonable skill and care in placing the bridge and monitoring her gum health, the need for extensive remedial work could have been prevented. The case was ultimately settled in June 2023, with Carol receiving a compensation of £9,250 in an out-of-court settlement. Notably, the dentist involved did not admit liability.

Carol Ann Williams’ quest for justice highlights the importance of maintaining high standards of care and diligence in dental practices to ensure the well-being of patients and avoid unnecessary distress and financial burdens.
