Woman Sues Dentist Over Alleged Negligence in Extensive Dental Procedure

USA: Kathleen Wilson, a Minnesota resident, has taken legal action against her dentist, Dr. Kevin Molldrem of Molldrem Family Dentistry in Eden Prairie. Wilson alleges that a comprehensive dental operation performed by Dr. Molldrem in July 2020, involving four root canals, eight dental crowns, and 20 fillings in a single session, resulted in her disfigurement.

Serious Accusations in the Lawsuit

Wilson filed a lawsuit in Hennepin County District Court, accusing Dr. Molldrem of negligence in treatment, administering an unsafe dosage of anesthesia, and falsifying medical records to conceal the excessive anesthesia. The lawsuit claims that Wilson suffered significant injuries due to the alleged malpractice.

Wilson’s legal team enlisted Dr. Avrum Goldstein, a Florida-based dentist, to provide an expert opinion. Dr. Goldstein’s report, dated November 14, pointed out several breaches of duty of care. While acknowledging that Dr. Molldrem made the correct diagnosis, the report criticized the quality of treatment provided during the extensive dental procedure.

Issues Aggravated by Patient’s Habits

Dr. Goldstein’s report highlighted Wilson’s habit of frequent candy consumption and her medical condition, irritable bowel syndrome, which led to vomiting one to two times a week. These factors, along with decay on virtually every tooth, presented a rare and challenging case. The report suggested that a more gradual and considered approach was necessary, as opposed to attempting to address all dental issues in a single visit.

One key finding in Dr. Goldstein’s report was the administration of almost twice the maximum recommended dosage of anesthesia. While the standard maximum dosage is 490 mg, Dr. Molldrem allegedly administered 960 mg to Wilson during the 5.5-hour procedure.

Ongoing Consequences and Damages Sought

Following the procedure, Wilson sought a second opinion at a different dental office in 2022, revealing recurrent decay and additional damage. She subsequently received treatment at the University of Minnesota Dental School to repair and replace some restorations in an attempt to stabilize her oral health. Dr. Goldstein warned that, if all of Wilson’s teeth require replacement with implants, the extensive dental work and associated expenses may have been in vain.

In addition to the physical consequences, Wilson claimed to have endured pain, embarrassment, disfigurement, and distress. Seeking justice, she is pursuing damages of at least $50,000 through the lawsuit against Dr. Molldrem.

Dr. Kevin Molldrem, who opened his private practice in June 2004, is facing serious allegations regarding his treatment of Kathleen Wilson. At the time of reporting, Dr. Molldrem and his attorney, Nathaniel Weimer, have not responded to requests for comment on the matter. The case continues to unfold, with potential implications for both parties involved.
