Australian Dental Association Pushes for Elderly Care Reform

AUSTRALIA: A new push for comprehensive dental coverage for older Australians has emerged, with the Australian Dental Association (ADA) calling for the establishment of a Seniors Dental Benefits Schedule (SDBS), according to a recent report from startsat60.com. The proposed scheme would provide dental health services to senior citizens who hold federal concession cards, similar to the existing Children’s Dental Benefits Scheme (CDBS).

Growing Need Among Aging Population

Statistics indicate that Australians over 65 currently represent approximately 16% of the population, with projections suggesting this figure will double by 2062-63. The report highlights concerning dental health statistics, with 59% of seniors experiencing periodontitis and 27% reporting difficulties with eating due to dental issues.

COTA Australia Acting Chief Executive Officer Corey Irlam emphasized the broader health implications of poor dental care: “Evidence shows that poor dental health does not simply increase embarrassment and social isolation, there is also a relationship with the increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and chronic malnutrition in older people.”

Political Background and Current Status

While both Labor and the Greens have previously included senior dental care in their election platforms, implementation remains pending. Dr Chris Sanzaro, ADA President, acknowledged past government efforts but stressed the need for more action, stating, “We believe that by incorporating a range of targeted, sustainable and cost-effective measures including the SDBS, it will enable the government to responsibly address gaps in access for older Australians.”

Dr Sarah Raphael from the Australian Dental Association NSW Branch offered practical advice for maintaining oral health: “It’s the good old basic things – performing oral hygiene twice daily – toothbrushing with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning dentures and leaving them out at night, eating a diet low in added sugar, drinking tap water as the main drink and staying well hydrated.” She emphasized the importance of preventive care, noting that regular dental visits in senior years are crucial for avoiding complications.

Campaign for Change

The ADA’s “Time to Act” campaign aims to address what they describe as “a legacy of poor investment in oral health for older people.” With the current Labor government expressing commitment to improving dental service access for seniors but not specifying implementation timelines, advocacy groups continue to press for concrete action on this healthcare initiative.
