DRA DIGEST: October 2023 edition

Welcome to DRA DIGEST — the Newsletter of Dental Resource Asia (DRA).

Dear DRA Digest Community,

In this age of ever-evolving technology, we find ourselves in a world where social media wields pervasive influence, touching every facet of our existence, including our professional endeavours. A recent cross-sectional study unveiled the effects of Instagram® on the lives of dental students and professionals, offering valuable insights into the impact of this platform.

This intriguing research aimed to investigate how Instagram® influences the lives of dental students and professionals and its implications for their learning and professional performance. To carry out this examination, a specially designed questionnaire, the InstaAA© questionnaire, was employed to assess the extent of Instagram® usage and its impact on the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of participants, as well as their attitudes toward the platform.

The findings are eye-opening. The study revealed that a significant proportion of participants dedicated between 30 minutes and 1 hour daily to Instagram®, and more than half acknowledged the platform’s influence on their dressing, behaviour, and even the usage of other social media platforms. Over half of the respondents reported experiencing common distractions during essential tasks, and a substantial number indicated negative effects on their mental and emotional well-being due to Instagram® use.

This research serves as a timely reminder of the importance of balance. It underscores the need to harmonise the role of Instagram® and similar social media platforms with academic and personal responsibilities. We’re reminded that in our digital age, where the lines between the virtual and the tangible often blur, education and awareness regarding Instagram® features and their potential consequences are crucial.

This study compels us to consider the evolving role of digital platforms in shaping our behaviour and the need to navigate this digital era with prudence and wisdom. Striking the right balance between the virtual and reality is key. The lessons learned from this study can serve as a compass as we continue our professional and personal journeys in this dynamic digital landscape.

Yours Sincerely,
The DRA Digest Team
