DRA DIGEST: September 2023 edition

Welcome to DRA DIGEST — the Newsletter of Dental Resource Asia (DRA).

Dear DRA Digest Community,

In this month’s edition of DRA Digest, we bring to your attention an eye-opening story that underscores the importance of vigilance when it comes to allergies in the dental chair. We often think of allergies as being triggered by the usual suspects – pollen, pet dander, or certain foods. However, the case of Lily Lindsay, a 29-year-old woman from Aberdeenshire, UK, reminds us that allergies can lurk in surprising places.

Lily’s journey to enhance her smile by opting for dental composite veneers took an unexpected turn. What was meant to be a confidence-boosting experience turned into a harrowing ordeal as she developed severe allergic reactions. Her skin became dry, flaky, and painful, reminiscent of ‘elephant skin.’ The distress from this condition pushed her to resort to anti-depressants, highlighting the profound impact such unexpected allergies can have on one’s mental health.

This incident serves as a stark reminder that dental procedures, latex, anaesthesia, and even certain metals used in fillings, brackets, or partial dentures can potentially trigger allergic reactions. What may seem unrelated on the surface can profoundly affect your patient’s oral health.

Lily’s case also sheds light on the importance of maintaining open communication with your patient. Probing them about any allergies, no matter how seemingly irrelevant, can make a significant difference in their treatment plan.

Your patient’s well-being is paramount, and we are here to keep you informed and empowered in your oral healthcare journey with them.

Happy Reading!

Yours Sincerely,
The DRA Digest Team
