Formlabs Introduces Two 3D Printing Resins for Personalised Patient Care

Formlabs, a provider of 3D printing solutions, has announced the addition of two new materials for dental and medical applications. The Dental LT Comfort Resin and Biomed Durable Resin are now available for use with Formlabs’ Form 3B, Form 3B+, and Form 3BL printers.

These additions aim to advance personalized patient care in various healthcare settings, including point-of-care facilities, dental and orthodontic practices and labs, as well as medical device manufacturers.

Dental LT Comfort Resin

According to a press release, the Dental LT Comfort Resin is a durable and flexible material designed for long-term occlusal splints, nightguards, and bleaching trays. Its primary focus is to provide patients with enhanced comfort, fit, and durability, thereby improving compliance with treatment plans and reducing the need for follow-up visits.

With Dental LT Comfort Resin, dental and orthodontic labs, as well as dental practices, can now directly 3D print flexible splints that are not only biocompatible but also comfortable for patients, says the manufacturer. The material reportedly requires minimal polishing to achieve high optical transparency, ensuring long-term use without compromising patient comfort and satisfaction.

Stephan Kreimer, Director of Kreimer Dentallabor GmbH & Co. KG, expressed his amazement with Dental LT Comfort Resin after beta-testing the material, stating “The material’s pre-polished appearance and exceptional translucency right after printing significantly reduced post-processing time. Furthermore, I was impressed by its fracture resistance and flexibility, which ensure optimal comfort, making it the perfect choice for dental splints.”

BioMed Durable Resin

To address the need for mass personalization and patient-specific devices and procedure-specific instruments the company has introduced BioMed Durable Resin. This new formulation is specifically developed to withstand impact, rough handling, and pressure while maintaining excellent clarity and surface finish, says the company.

Patient-specific instruments (PSI) designed for unique patient anatomy have demonstrated a 16% improvement in patient outcomes when used with guides, reducing complications by almost 30%, according to Formlabs. The introduction of BioMed Durable Resin supports the production of biocompatible and durable PSIs and customizable surgical instruments. The material’s mechanical properties provide design flexibility and increased indications, while also ensuring reliable production for optimal surgical results.

BioMed Durable Resin is a USP Class VI material produced in an FDA-registered, ISO 13485 facility. It can be safely used in applications involving long-term skin contact, as well as short-term contact with tissue, bone, and dentin.

“With the release of these two new materials, we’re proud to expand our material library and enable dental and healthcare professionals and engineers to push the boundaries of device development,” said Guillaume Bailliard, President at Formlabs.
