Hydrogen Peroxide Mouthwash Recalled Due to Poisoning Risk

USA: More than 102,000 bottles of Heritage Store Hydrogen Peroxide Mouthwash are being recalled by Nutraceutical Corporation due to a potential poisoning risk, prompting the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to advise parents to take immediate action by placing the recalled bottles out of reach of children.

The recall, issued on Feb. 29, impacts all bottles of Heritage Store Hydrogen Peroxide Mouthwash in Wintermint and Eucalyptus Mint flavors. These bottles, identified by their dark opaque brown color with a white lid and pink and white label, were sold between October 2010 and December 2023 for approximately $10.50 per bottle at various stores nationwide and online.

Reason for Recall

The recall stems from a lack of child-resistant packaging on the mouthwash, which contains ethanol. The Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA) mandates child-resistant packaging for products with a certain concentration of ethanol to prevent accidental ingestion by children. While no incidents or injuries have been reported, symptoms of ethanol poisoning can include vomiting, nausea, slowed breathing, and confusion, among others.

In response to the recall, the Heritage Store stated, “While we have not received any report of injury or illness, the below-identified products contain 3 grams or more of ethanol (alcohol) per container and therefore require child-resistant packaging.” The company emphasized that there are no known safety risks for adults using the product as directed, and there are no defects or adulterations in the products.

Consumer Action

Consumers who purchased the recalled mouthwash are urged to store it immediately in a safe location out of children’s reach. Nutraceutical Corporation is offering refunds or free product replacements, including shipping, to affected consumers. The company is actively reaching out to known purchasers regarding the recall.

Addressing the recall on its website, the Heritage Store affirmed its commitment to safety, stating, “We take safety concerns very seriously and always want to offer our customers the highest-quality and safest products on the market.”
