Kuala Lumpur: Health minister Khairy Jamaluddin announced that the Malaysian Cabinet has approved the creation of 8,686 additional posts for medical, dental and pharmaceutical officers.

Scheduled to take effect between 2022-2025, the extra posts include: 300 dental; 3,586 medical officers; and 300 pharmaceutical officers. Of these, 4,186 permanent appointments will be created in the ministry in 2022.

“The Cabinet has also agreed that at least 1,500 permanent posts of medical officers, dental officers and pharmacists be created in the Ministry of Health (MOH) each year from 2023 to 2025,” said Minister Khairy in a townhall meeting on 10 February.

Beginning in 2023, the Cabinet said a total of 800 permanent positions for physicians and 70 for dentists will be created in the ministry on a yearly basis. This job creation initiative is designed to cover the output of permanent physicians in health facilities under the ministry.

According to the minister, new appointments in the government and ministry have, since 2016, solely been made on the availability of vacancies. This arrangement significantly impacted graduates in the three fields.

A total of 3,515 permanent positions – including those of 1,118 medical officers, 1,109 dental officers, and 1,288 pharmacists – were filled between 2016-2021.

Following a protest by doctors, the cabinet decided in July 2021, that medical officers upon completing their period of service, must extend their contracts another two years to facilitate “continuity of service and preparation for specialist studies”.
