MOU Aims to Strengthen Talent Pipeline for Digital Dentistry Field
SINGAPORE: The National Dental Centre Singapore (NDCS), the country’s leading specialty center for oral healthcare, has signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) to advance digital dentistry in Singapore. The collaboration seeks to prepare biomedical engineering students for the expanding role of digital technologies in dentistry.
Enhancing Skills and Career Awareness
The MOU entails internships and learning journeys designed to provide biomedical engineering students with insights into Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and dentofacial imaging in dentistry. This initiative aims to equip students with the necessary skills and awareness to excel in the field of digital dentistry. CAD/CAM technology enables precise fabrication of dental prostheses, while digital dentistry revolutionizes oral healthcare delivery, offering enhanced precision and efficiency in procedures.
Role of Clinical Engineers
Participants in the program will have the opportunity to explore career paths as clinical engineers, collaborating with various healthcare stakeholders to ensure the safe and effective utilization of medical equipment in clinical settings. Clinical Associate Professor Goh Bee Tin, CEO of NDCS, emphasized the significance of digital dentistry, stating, “Through this MOU, we hope to train and empower a pipeline of talent that will redefine and elevate the landscape of dental care in Singapore.”
Practical Learning Experiences
The program will offer participants insights into best practices in digital technologies at NDCS. The first learning journey is scheduled for May 31, 2024, where biomedical engineering students will visit NDCS to learn from the organization’s clinical engineers in the Digital Dentistry Unit. Internship placements at NDCS are planned for late 2024 and early 2025.
