Patient Awarded £11,500 in Settlement After Dental Nightmare

UK: Atif Ahmed, a resident of Moston, has been awarded £11,500 in an out-of-court settlement from a dental practice, describing the ordeal as ‘the worst experience of my life.’

Atif took legal action against his longtime dentist, asserting that their failure to detect decay resulted in a series of complications, leaving him anxious, depressed, and struggling with eating.

In 2018, Atif began experiencing mouth pain and was advised to undergo a crown and several fillings. However, his discomfort escalated during the treatment, leading to concerns about the procedures.

Series of Complications

After the crown fell out in 2019, Atif returned for an emergency appointment, facing pain when biting down and issues with other teeth. Despite his concerns, he claims the practice did not apologize, simply replacing the crown.

Atif endured subsequent extractions, infections, and ongoing pain. Dissatisfied, he sought a second opinion from another practice, discovering the need for root canal treatments, crowns, and decayed teeth. Further consultations at two different dental practices aimed to address infections, abscesses, swelling, and pus in his mouth.

Legal Intervention and Settlement

In 2019, Atif contacted The Dental Law Partnership seeking compensation for his suffering. An analysis of his records suggested that timely and appropriate care could have prevented the need for extensive treatments, root canals, and future tooth loss.

Jennifer Paine, representing Atif, commented, “The distress and pain our client has experienced was completely unnecessary. If the dentists involved had carried out adequate treatment in the first place, his problems could have been avoided.”

The case was successfully settled when the dental practice agreed to pay £11,500 in an out-of-court settlement. The practitioners did not admit liability.

Reflecting on his ordeal, Atif stated, “It was the worst experience I’ve had in my life; worse than when I broke my kneecap.” He highlighted ongoing issues, including gum swelling and pus, resulting in weight loss and worsening anxiety and depression.
