SmileDirectClub Ceases Operations Amidst Failed Resurrection Attempt

SmileDirectClub, the orthodontic services company known for its mail-based aligners, has announced the immediate cessation of its global operations. The decision comes after a failed attempt to secure investments to revive the struggling company.

For existing SmileDirectClub customers, the sudden shutdown raises concerns, particularly for those who still have pending payments but will no longer receive aligners or customer support. The company stated on its website that aligner treatment and customer care support are no longer available through their telehealth platform.

Lifetime Guarantee Cancelled

SmileDirectClub has also terminated its lifetime guarantee and canceled all outstanding orders for aligners. However, customers enrolled in the SmileyPay Plan are expected to fulfill their monthly payments as per the SmilePay program’s terms until the payment is made in full.

Customers seeking refunds face uncertainty, with the company mentioning that more information will be provided once the bankruptcy process determines the next steps and additional measures for customers.

Backlash and Legal Battles

Founded in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2019, SmileDirectClub went public with a market cap close to $9 billion. The company aimed to offer cost-effective teeth-straightening solutions, but it faced backlash from dental professionals, orthodontists, and the American Dental Association, who criticized its practices for potentially endangering patients. Legal disputes ensued as SmileDirectClub defended its DIY orthodontics approach.

Despite going public, SmileDirectClub faced financial challenges and accumulated nearly $900 million in debt by the time it filed for bankruptcy. As a publicly traded company, it never turned a profit.

Seeking Information and Contact Details

The company has advised customers with questions to contact HFD at 1-877-874-3877 or email support@gohfd.com.
